Model for copyright legislation in Africa

Partner in Grette, Astri M. Lund, has drafted a proposal for amendments to the Copyright Act of Malawi. A bill using this proposal is presently in the making.

The draft bill has been taken up by SEACONET (Southern and Eastern African Copyright Network) to be used as a basis for making a regional model for copyright legislation in Southern and Eastern Africa. SEACONET is an organisation of copyright societies  and copyright offices in 14 countries in the region. The draft aims, inter alia, at securing that the legislation meets the requirements in the TRIPS Agreement and in the 1996 WIPO conventions on copyright and on the rights of performers and phonogram producers, and to facilitate the collective management of rights.
